I've been having the worst time sleeping this summer. Maybe because I check my email right before bedtime and that stresses me out, or its too hot (I have a bitch of a time sleeping when its hot and sweaty), or I just have too much on my mind, which is why I keep a notebook near my pillow so I can scribble in the darkness all the thoughts and ideas that swirl around and feel a bit of a peace of mind. And I hate taking Nyquil or Drowsy Cough Medicine when I don't need it. I'm beginning to realize that when I used to drink a nightcap of a gin martini, that maybe it was useful, well, at least it knocked me out. Either that, or I must increase my biking habits, so my body is too exhausted to care about the heat or stressful thoughts. Either case being, I stay up until the 4ams. But at least the other day I created something wonderful *at least in my opinion* Perhaps, my favorite art piece in a while....

7 Easy Ways to Remain Active in your Art

One of the joys, and pains, of being an artist and a writer is getting people, an audience, to see your work. No matters if they like it or not. More importantly should be that you have a personal passion for your craft and the audacity to share it with the world. It takes great courage to share one thoughts with the world.

As a fellow writer and artist, I wish to share with you a few helpful resources to remain active in your art career and lifestyle:

1. Publish your own work. Create a handmade chapbook or artzine. Keep plenty on hand to give to other artists you respect, people you wish to share your art with.

2. Submit work to zines, e-publications, journals, newspapers. Enter local writing contests. Websites like duotrope.com are good jumping off places to see which publications are accepting submissions.

3. Work on your craft. You can't submit 5 poems for a submission if you aren't writing everyday. Many writing publications only accept new and unpublished work, meaning that you have to write all the time. It pushes me to keep writing, keep pushing myself to edit old work, keep propelling forward with new ideas.

4. Gather a creative support group, whether its a few people that meets over coffee to discuss ideas and goals, someone you can paint alongside, or hosting art + wine nights at your place once a month. Its important to nurture community amongst artists, as it can be a brutal and harsh world of critique and criticism. Online writing workshops can be a place to find writer support, like theundeniables.org, a Wordpress-based workshop that urges writers to write daily.

5. Participate in community events. Local spaces like Tuesday Night Cafe and Common Ground have open mic slots and places to display your artwork.

6. Breathe once in a while. Everything will be okay. Keep creating. I believe the world needs to hear your story.

7. Take your art seriously. Because if you don't, don't expect anyone else to.

MAB Nights, Entry of Illusion

Eyeball Burp was asked to decorate an entrance way for a theater group called Theater Mab

that hosts experimental performance nights called MAB Nights.

We created a fabric installation called the Entry of Illusion.

The installation we created consists of several bed sheets that A'misa and I hand painted.

My studio walls still have the residue of the painting process.

They make for interesting set design I would say.

The opening night of MAB Nights was amazing!
It can be described as an experimental type of theater experience.
The theater group performs a number of short plays in different parts of the room.
They literally force the audience to rotate their chairs after each performance.

Evelyn Serrano is a Cuban interdisciplinary artist, educator, independent curator, community organizer, and mother currently living in Los Angeles County, California. Serrano obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts, School of Art, in Valencia, California. Prior to that, she studied visual arts, design, art theory, epistemology, and literature in Havana, Montevideo, and Miami. She has exhibited her work in many solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. In addition, she is honored to have worked with talented artists, choreographers, writers and performers in many exhibitions, projects and art events she has organized and curated throughout the United States as well as in Montevideo, Tel Aviv, Tijuana, and La Habana. Serrano currently teaches at the CalArts School of Theater, and has lectured and led workshops at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, the CEART in Mexicali, the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock, the University of Texas in Dallas, and the Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial in La Habana. She is the founder of NOMAD LAB, a laboratory of pedagogy, the arts and social change in the heart of Valle del Oro, Newhall. Her work is focused on context-specific practices that advance the impact of the arts as a tool for social change.

Evelyn will talk about NOMAD LAB, a laboratory of creativity, collaboration and community for youth and their families, located in the heart of the Valle del Oro neighborhood in Newhall, Santa Clarita. NOMAD LAB designs and implements free inclusive arts, capacity building and leadership programs to address the rise in criminal activity in the neighborhood, and to offer a safe forum for dialogue, learning and community engagement. NOMAD LAB’s multigenerational and multi-locational programming makes use of vacant apartments available in the community. It moves to different locations throughout the neighborhood as the apartments it occupies become rented, hence the “nomadic” nature of its programs. NOMAD LAB is a truly collaborative project that relies on the passion, commitment and strong partnerships with community youth, parents, teaching artists, property managers, policy makers, and City staff. Through its inclusive and innovative pedagogical approach and community-based programs, NOMAD LAB aims to be a laboratory for “home-grown” change. Beyond its impact in the Valle del Oro community, NOMAD LAB plans to continue to work closely with policy makers, City staff, community organizers, and educators to design neighborhood-specific inclusive and integrated alternatives to traditional gang-suppression and graffiti abatement strategies. NOMAD LAB is committed to developing a community organizing and engagement model that can be successfully replicated and implemented in other low and moderate-income rental communities in Los Angeles County dealing with issues of neighborhood violence and intolerance.

Elizabeth Chin is an anthropologist whose work has focused on race and inequality, children and childhood, and dance. Her book Purchasing Power (U. of MInessota Press 2001) was a finalist for the C. Wright MIlls prize. She has taught at Occidental College since 1993 and in the fall will join the faculty of the Media Design Matters program at Art Center College of Design.

Elizabeth will present Katherine Dunham’s Magnetic Circle which explores the work and legacy of Katherine Dunham, who was a pioneering dancer and anthropologist. This performative presentation explores the technique that Dunham developed, examining its ethnographic basis in Haitian vodou practices and principles, and in the process argues that Dunham’s intervention in the dance studio was radical for its challenge to the elite, racist practices ingrained in the world of concert dance in her time.

Alex and A’misa Chiu are the publishers and editors of Eyeball Burp Press. Alex is an illustrator who has built a reputation for himself in the underground art and comics community. He creates stream of conciousness drawings. A’misa is an artist who is exploring subconsciousness and the role of dreams through collage and writing. Through Eyeball Burp, they build, experiment, and collaborate with fellow artists, musicians and thinkers, in an attempt to create new ways of expression & community.

Alex and A’misa will talk about their personal experiences within art communities (what works, what doesn’t, and the importance of like-minded people). They will touch upon do-it-yourself education (alternative schooling), throwing events beyond trying to make a buck (transforming spaces and engaging people), trends in the artworld (honing in on the zine and doodle movement), and the importance of publishing and blogging.

One day I needed to go to the bathroom, so I asked the dude, where's the toliet? He said down the hall to the right. He could have said, pass the hugest pink bunny that you've ever seen and to the right.

The pink bunny emerges yet again, but this time dressed as a cross-legged mannequin sitting in a wheelchair. There is Jesse and Alex, we are chatting within the Violethour, next to Bookmachine.

An entity, an organ--a wig!

I stumbled upon La Perruquiere, the visual biography zine of female wigmaker and performance artist Gloria Toyun Park, at an artbook store in Santa Monica.

Gloria Park's Groucho Marx-like eyebrows, one inch high by two-inch wide symmetrical rectangles, shocked her peers at UCSD in 1989, and continued making profound impressions on people whereever she went. Donning saran wrap and steak before Gaga, her irreproducible style coupled with her obsessions with wigs made Park a sensationalistic celebrity from Hollywood to New York City's Temple Bar scene. She channeled her aunt's wig shop in Hollywood into a passion for wig assemblages-structures or as she termed them "Wig Disasters." Ms. Park's "Fanasty Wigs" are linked with human self-conception and notions of attractiveness, as well as Park's Korean ethnicity, female identity and family custom.

Many of the images in this zine are from live performances or in debt to James Steven Cox, English author of The Illustrated Dictionary of Hairdressing and Wigmaking, who has done a lifetime of scholarly research in wig making and its history.

an American Comedy, Book 1: Hell

Downtown Fullerton rocks. Lee's Sandwiches, a train station, The Continental (where we saw The Color Turning play a free show once) and Hibbleton Art Gallery. After picking up a Downtown Fullerton Art Walk map (first Fridays of the month), we wandered around looking for the new location.

Fortune! We ran into Jesse La Tour, the gallery dude, walking around and he opened up the space for us. OMG--I almost shat my pants because Hibbleton is now inhabiting a gorgeous old machine warehouse space, alongside PAS Gallery, Violethour, with more projects along the way. Most exciting is Hibbleton's Small Press and Zine corner (!!!), soon to be bookstore, though they are still drywalling that puppy. Jesse says he's become obsessed with zines and is now, along with running for city council, making them constantly. Us too! Anyways, I gave him Colorish Dreams, my newest blogzine, and we talked about our collective passion to see the LA/OC zine culture grow, and to have spaces and resources to do just that.

Before we left, I picked up his Illustrated Memoir zine. Here's a sneak peek. It rocks, by the way. It is an intimate picture into his Hell, leaving you running to the bathroom, thankful to remove your own bowels, as you contemplate your own spirituality and draw upon your own profoundly mundane moments. This is part one of a series of three. Enjoy!

Before Eyeball Burp existed, there was a small outdoor cafe that students at ucsd would sometimes (most times) gather. Over and over again as a struggling art theory student, I would seek the insight of Becky Y Park. She was at the time, and still is, a budding film maker and theorist. You can find some of her current insighst-photography at adjacencies. I acredit much of my own personal knowledge of critical film theory to her teachings and guidence as we transversed the labyrith of what students refered to the art and architecture library.

An Interview With Janice Lee by David Hoenigman

I first met Janice at the commontable of the writer's commune that I resided in in college. She sat there talking theory with other 'lit kids' while we dipped bread in sauces and sipped on red wine. I was a youngster then, unsure of my future, of my ability to be a writer and a lover, and I surely gleaned much from her and the other editors of PULP, an experiemental poetry magazine that hosted many reading/gatherings at our humble condo on Modena Street. I probably learned more about writing and living from that one year of listening at the kitchen table than at all my classes at UCSD. And I'm so glad to have recently seen Janice read at Beyond Baroque in Culver City, and love her most recent work, Kerotakis. Please enjoy this interview that Wordriot had with her. ((a'misa))

Janice Lee is a writer, artist, editor, and curator. She is interested in the relationships between metaphors of consciousness and theoretical neuroscience, and experimental narrative. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from CalArts and currently lives in Los Angeles where she is a co-curator for the feminist reading series Mommy, Mommy!, co-editor of the online journal [out of nothing], and co-founder of the interdisciplinary arts organization Strophe. What projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a novel about our uncanny relationship with God and the consciousness of God. It’s about God and religion and the history of religion and the Bible, but it’s also about cyborgs and the technological singularity and the brain and religious experiences of the brain and the God experience. And then among other things, it’s also about confessions and spiders and daughters and the Antichrist.

I’m also trying to finish a sort of memoir-ish piece about my family. My mother passed away last month and I’ve been increasingly uncomfortable, but also more inclined, to go back to it. I’m sort of waiting.

And then I’m working on a collaborative text with Laura Vena, a book about time travel and something called the chronovisor. And a science fiction novel with my brother Eugene.

When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. And why? Because I feel I have to.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I don’t think this happened at any particular moment. It’s sort of a strange label, really. I write, so I guess that makes me a writer. I draw and make art too, so I guess I’m also an artist. Though really I feel like there’s too many labels we have to carry around: writer, artist, editor, curator, poet, novelist, teacher, professor, etc. Like little Cub Scout badges we can show off. Not sure why there can’t be a simpler term to encompass all of this, for someone who just contributes to the literary community at large, and does all of these things collaboratively and simultaneously, not in separation. Or really, no term at all. I feel like being a writer is really more a way of being in the world, than an occupation.

What inspired you to write your first book?

Technically speaking, my first book was KEROTAKIS, and it was my thesis at CalArts. Many things got me pointed in that direction. I had been reading a lot of neuroscience and consciousness studies and alchemy, and especially Julian Jaynes (whose book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind affected me greatly then).

The first book I really wrote, though, was this chaotic graphic text I wrote in undergrad at UCSD. Anna Joy Springer, a phenomenal teacher, influenced and helped and guided me a lot in my early years of writing. Though I’ve grown and changed a lot since then, I still give her a lot of credit. I worked on this angry and sort of crass book, about everything from God to war to race politics, Gramsci was a character, and there were all these crazy doodles and drawings. It’s easy to see the Kathy Acker influence in it.

Who or what has influenced your writing?

I’ve been influenced greatly by what I read. And I read a lot. Though unlike most writers I know, I don’t read a lot of fiction or poetry. I read a lot of scientific texts, like Antonio Damasio or V.S. Ramachandran or Paul Churchland. I read as many books as I can about the brain, about neuroscience, about psychology, and human memory. Knowledge is sort of an obsession for me. I follow many science journals, especially those concerning cognitive science or consciousness. I read anthropology, theology, alchemy, philosophy. Lately I’ve been studying the Bible and different translations and its history. All of this really feeds into my writing, and the writing reflects that, I think. Everything I’ve ever read has influenced me in some way. If I have to list some specifics off the top of my head: Julian Jaynes, Gramsci, Chomsky, Camus, Kierkegaard, George Lakoff, Nietzsche (the first time I read him I was in fourth grade), Kafka, e.e. cummings, Badiou, and an infinite number of others.

And I’ve been lucky to have had some really amazing teachers and mentors and friends. Anna Joy Springer: I might not be writing now if not for her. Jon Wagner: Phenomenal instructor and person. Laura Vena: Besides collaborating, we also workshop work regularly, give each other deadlines. Our relationship absolutely feeds into my writing productivity. Joe Milazzo: One of the best readers of my work. And he’s the one who inspired me to really become interested in the novel as a form again.

How has your environment/upbringing colored your writing?

When I was 8, my mother dropped The Holy Bible onto my desk in front of me and told me to read it and make up my own mind.

What genre are you most comfortable writing?

I really despise having to categorize my writing by what genre it is, though I often have to. I care much more about what the work is about and its concepts, than if it is really a poem or short story or hybrid work (I despise this term more) or something else. When I wrote KEROTAKIS, poets would tell me that it was a long poem. And fiction writers would tell me it was a novel. Sometimes I’m purposeful, like the project I’m working on now, I’m adamant in calling it a novel. But really the category is more a matter of convenience. Generally, I don’t think genre categorizations really accomplish much, and seem sort of outdated at this point.

Is there a message in your work that you want readers to grasp?

Message, no, but there is something I’m writing towards. And the objective is really more or less something impossible to obtain, but for me, absolutely necessary to work towards. I think failure is inevitable in my line of work, though I don’t think failure is necessary a negative. Though there are different kinds of failures, and for me, one kind of failure might be okay, while another, not really.

What really interests me is what happens when someone reads a text, and not just any text, but one that really affects them, changes them somehow. I’m interested in these changes, both conceptually speaking, but also physically, how these changes get manifested neurologically. I’m interested in introspection and the construction of a phenomenological self-model during reading, and in narrativization versus narrative.

I’m very interested in what Badiou terms the “event,” as a “rupture in ontology, a being-in-itself – through which the subject finds his or her realization and reconciliation with ‘truth.” Or even what Derrida termed the “blind spot,” or de Man’s point of literary disruption. I think these are talking about the same thing, that literature can potentially offer an alternate reality which actually creates a space for chances to be made in the conceptual system that structures this one.

In my opinion, the goal of experimental narrative should be, not to continue a futile anti-narrative aesthetic that ignores the inherent and necessary quality of narrativization for human understanding, but to push a narrative aesthetic that allows and inspires readers “to view their ideological embeddedness with fresh eyes.” (This quote I borrow from Csicsery-Ronay, Jr. writing about science fiction.)

What is needed then, is a reinvestigation of the writing event through the metaphor most suited to it: narrative. Writing is thus neither inherently narrative or anti-narrative, but the cognitive processes that dictate it, the understanding of it (there since truth is understanding, the “truth” of the matter), are. This isn’t anything new. Writers and thinkers have always known that truth is based on understanding. But I think recent discoveries in neuroscience are showing more and more that philosophical questions we’ve been tackling can be manifested physically too. Science is showing more and more that we are indeed physically wired to narrativize the world, and so it is becoming increasingly crucial to reconsider narrative in terms of mediating between the philosophical questions of truth and subjectivity in writing, and the biological/neurological mechanisms of science. I really do believe all the great disciplines have been asking the same big questions all along, and that the big questions do have answers. I also believe that writers, working uniquely and intimately with language and conceptual systems and narrative, have real power to do something about all this, to push people to really think about things.

What book are you reading now?

Too many to count. I’m constantly cycling through books and might be reading anywhere between 6 and 20 books at a time. Though I will mention a book I read recently that I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. Aaron Kunin’s The Sore Throat, I reread it a couple times, something I almost never do. I won’t say much about it, just that it was phenomenal.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I’m not sure how new “new” should be to. But I will say that I think one of the most important writers writing right now is Vanessa Place. I’m convinced that Notes On Conceptualisms (co-authored with Rob Fitterman) and La Medusa should be canonical texts. And her recent project Statement of Facts is even more interesting and supremely (though really productively) problematic.

Others writers who I think are amazing and some maybe not out there yet but when they are will blow your mind: Joe Milazzo, Ian McCarty, Maxi Kim, Laura Vena, Jared Woodland, Nancy Romero, Saehee Cho, Harold Abramowitz.

Most days, we trekked out in the snow and walked everywhere, trying not to get lost through the mazes of roads and streets. the nights consisted of wine, cheese, salami, and any other goodies (like persimmons, tangerines, carrots, brussel sprouts, sausage and kraut) that we found along the way.

The DIY Dragon
For the Eyeball Burpers

In a far-off kingdom there lived a kindly king and queen. They had a single daughter, the apple of their eye. As she grew older, all of the young men of the realm began to compete for her attention, and foremost among them was the king's youngest and bravest knight.

To prove his love, the knight sorted out a misunderstanding surrounding a black knight and a bridge, and he helped some farmers with an incursion of manticores. He was pretty badass.

The princess, meanwhile, sewed a tapestry. The subject of the tapestry was ogre wrestling, so the princess went out and wrestled the biggest ogres in the kingdom as research for her tapestry. When she ran out of ogres, she chopped up some gorgons, for the design on the tapestry's border. She was pretty badass, too.

The king looked with favor on the knight, knowing that the young man was a match for his formidable daughter. The king was something of a traditionalist, however, and he waited for a dragon to swing by and kidnap his daughter, so that he could offer her hand in marriage to whoever saved her. The king was sure the knight was more than up to the task, and he wasn't the slightest bit worried about his daughter, who could handle any dragon.

The knight and princess waited patiently. The princess even resolved to avoid suplexing the dragon before the knight arrived so that he could rescue her the old-fashioned way (though she reserved the right to soften the dragon up a bit). There was only one problem: no dragon appeared.

The king and his councilors were puzzled. The latest survey of the dragon population indicated that there were plenty of dragons about. What they had not realized was that the dragons had gotten wise to the situation and learned to steer clear of the knight, and no dragon in the kingdom was foolish enough to try to kidnap such a princess.

The lamentable lack of draconic abduction may have caused another couple to despair, but these two were undaunted. They found the royal engineer with the wispiest beard and the most cluttered workplace, and they commissioned a mighty work to their specifications. The knight visited a scheming alchemist with chemical-stained fingers, while the princess sought out an experienced ranger with eyes like a hawk. When these two creative souls set their minds to a task, nothing could stop them, and there was nothing they loved more than working on a project together.

On Saturday, October 16, the royal court was in an uproar. Courtiers ran hither and thither while ladies gossiped and men shouted. A great crowd gathered in the courtyard, and all faces looked up to the princess's tower, where a great wood-and-paper dragon beat its enormous wings slowly as it perched on the balcony. The dragon's eyes glowed red with the heat of its furnace as smoke poured from its smokestack nostrils.

The knight sad astride the clattering, puffing beast. He worked a complex control panel full of levers and knobs and beamed at his princess as she emerged from her room. She somersaulted into the empty chair next to the knight's and cranked a steering wheel, sending the dragon flapping mightily from the tower.

The beast roared and spat flame into the air as it flew over the courtyard, so low that the onlookers tumbled to the ground in surprise and delight. The dragon sped off, carrying the princess and the knight to their next adventure.

The king watched them go with a smile on his face. "Works for me," he said, and dabbed at his eye with a handkerchief.
